History

Parts of the continent were mapped first in the 17th century. In 1901 six colonies united to form the federal Commonwealth of Australia. In the second half of the 20th century Australia developed a highly diversified economy.

The Australian Flag

The stars of the Southern Cross represent Australia's geographic position in the Southern Hemisphere. The large Commonwealth star symbolizes the federation of the states and territories, and the Union Jack reflects Australia's early ties to Great Britain.

National Colours

The colours of the national floral emblem, the Golden Wattle, green and gold, are Australia's national colours.

National Day

Australia Day is celebrated each year on 26 January which is the anniversary of the unfurling of the British flag in 1788.
