Probleme Wechsel von Familie oder Au-pair

How often can I change family?

Dear cAP team and members,

after my first host family got divorced, I had to change family. My current family now doesn't care about the rules regarding allowed work and maximum working hours so I would like to find a new host family, who really treats me the way an au pair is supposed to be treated.

Now they tell me, that it's not possible for me to change family again, as it's only allowed to change family once. Is this true?

Thanks & BR,

an au pair from Venezuela

Dear au pair,

our first au pair (we currently have our forth au pair) was in quite the same situation as you: Her first host family had foster children, which went back to their real family, so that there was no need for an au pair anymore. She changed family but had really bad luck - her host father forced her to work more or less around the clock and as he lived on the countryside, she not even was able to attend a language course... We got her out there one night (she pretended to visit a friend) and we didn't have any problem to register her as an au pair with us and elongate her visa (actually, she didn't have a valid visa anymore, as her host father told her she doesn't need to elongate it, which was of course wrong, but her illegal status gave him even more power. Long story, but it's her story so I don't want to tell it - perhaps she's ready to share it with you...)

The important essence for you: No, there is no limitation how often you are allowed to change family!

I guess, authorities might start to ask questions, if you change family every second week, but if you and your new host family have good arguments for the change, it shouldn't be a problem at all!

Hope this helps!

Maria
